The Container Van Boutique Homestay in Siargao transforms repurposed container vans into a 358 sqm tropical retreat composed of eight guest rooms, each with its own private toilet and bath. The primary challenges were the island’s heavy rainfall, intense heat, and the thermal limitations of container structures.
The design responds with extended roof overhangs that provide shade and rain protection, paired with an integrated roof system that enables passive ventilation and heat release. Landscape design plays a key role in softening the rigid industrial form, using lush planting to balance structure with nature and enhance the tropical atmosphere.
Through climate-responsive strategies and material restraint, the project redefines container architecture as a comfortable, sustainable, and place-specific boutique hotel rooted in Siargao’s relaxed island character.
